Each
year During Canadian Western Agribition (CWA), in Regina,
Saskatchewan, FACS is on hand at the Agri-Ed Display to help
children learn about the wonderful world of animal agriculture.
The award winning Agri-Ed program has been a part of Canadian
Western Agribition since 1987 and has seen over 100,000 school
children visiting the area. The program was developed to provide
an educational forum for school tours. Displays have a grade
four to six target, but the information and interactivity can be
enjoyed by all ages. You can pet a sheep, touch cattle feed,
watch chicks hatching, see hazardous situations on farms, and
learn about the food retailing system, just to name a few. Demonstrations give visitors a more in-depth look. You can
watch a sheep being sheared, see a stock dog follow its
handler's commands, learn to make a wheat sheaf, and see honey
extracted from a hive. At the Agri-Ed auctions, schools register
to participate in a simulated auction. Successful bidders sign a
purchase agreement and write a cheque for the purchase - only
the cheque is not cashed and the cow stays at Agribition. The
Agri-Ed Farm Game generates almost as much excitement as
"Jeopardy." The registered classes choose two students
to participate in the quiz game. The questions relate to things
the students learned on their visit to Agribition.
